Creative Modern Activism Hawaii

About CMA

Mission Statement

Hawai`i’s unique history of resistance through art has roots in an illegally overthrown kingdom and generations of activists.  CMA will build on this legacy using art and music to work for change.  We intend to do this local style:  with respect, with community, with non-violence.

We are authors, academics, lawyers, curators, visual and performing artists and we believe that separate visions are a necessary characteristic a vibrant coalition working for justice. We recognize the interconnectedness of our global community and we ask how what is happening in Hawai`i is connected to what is  happening around the world.  We challenge the notion of Hawai`i as multicultural melting pot and we recognize and work against racial hierarchies.

We dream of a Hawai`i where there is marriage equality, affordable housing, and a diversified, sustainable economy; where people do not worry about having a job; where the arts are funded; and where young people do not have to leave Hawai`i, their home, to pursue their dreams. We dream of a Hawai`i where claims for native Hawaiian sovereignty are taken seriously and where native Hawaiian culture is not packaged for tourism. We dream of an end to violence as a means of settling disputes.  No war, no hate, no one left outside the circle of care.

CMA will work for this Hawai`i through creative projects that hold the promise of change.
